Hey hey and Happy Halloween to you and yours! The scary hits a little different this year with the most consequential election of our lifetime just five days away, so I hope you’re hanging in all right. I’m treating today’s post as a brief and hopefully comforting refuge from all that.
Starting with this video from Halloween five years ago! It’s one of the silliest/stupidest things I’ve ever made, a short medley of original Halloween songs. My kids laughed at it yesterday, which was a self-esteem boost I always welcome.
Hopefully you felt that was a worthwhile way to spend a minute of your life.
If you’re hungry for more distracting content, please enjoy this evergreen clip of Nicolas Cage in The Wicker Man, a film I’ve never seen except for the random insane snippets on YouTube. As we all wait for this election to happen, just know you’re at least feeling better than this guy:
Though Nicolas Cage’s performance in this seems unintentionally hilarious, I am a huge fan of his work and his weirdness, and I HIGHLY recommend last year’s Dream Scenario if you haven’t seen it yet. One of my favorite films of 2023 and Nicolas Cage is genuinely fantastic in it.
Katie and I have also been watching Veep for the first time—I know, we’re very late—but it’s been an immense comfort during this time of political uncertainty. So funny and so good.
In other news, I read my first Ann Patchett novel this month: Tom Lake. Also a huge comfort. I really loved it. Patchett writes so well about theater and actors.
Okay, that’s all for me this week. Please feel free to watch my stupid Halloween video as many times as you need to and, if that’s not enough, here’s me at a 2011 Joe Iconis Halloween show performing “Anything Can Happen on Halloween” from The Worst Witch (originally performed by icon Tim Curry).
I’m not performing in Joe’s show this year, but many amazing people are, and I think there are a few tix left for the show tomorrow night if you’re interested.
Have a superb Halloween, avoid Good n’ Plentys, and take lots of deep breaths through the next week. Big love.
I loved Tom Lake! And I loved your Halloween song medley. :)
You should absolutely watch all of The Wicker Man at some point. It is truly a time.
